Interstate
89: I-89, in the state of Vermont, begins in Concord NH at a
juncture with I-93, which in turn grows from I-95; all majors roads
running north south from that point include I-89. After leaving Concord,
it makes a westerly left turn, almost a beeline to the major ski areas
in Vermont. It?s no wonder that this corridor is the skiers? expressway
for those in the Mid-Atlantic States region looking to enjoy a little
downhill excitement.
Add to that popularity the fact that I-89 is also the main connection
between the major cities of Montreal, Canada, and Boston, Massachusetts,
and I-89?s importance becomes evident throughout this sparsely populated
state. Of its total 190 mile length, 130 miles of it are actually in the
State of Vermont.
Aside from those other distinctions, I-89 also serves the least
populated state capitol in the country, Montpelier, VT.
I-89's path cuts through the section of the Appalachians known as the
Green Mountains. Many scenic mountain peaks surround this last 40 miles
of I-89?s visit through Vermont, such as Camel?s Hump and other summits
reaching to over 4000 feet. Before leaving the state and arriving at its
northern terminus, I-89 pulls up to the city limits of Burlington,
Vermont. It takes a sharp turn to the north before it actually enters
the city proper, and there you?ll find exit #13, which feeds the
Interstate Highway systems only officially designated auxiliary highway,
I-189. (It?s basically a 1.3 mile access road for state highway 7.)
After turning north in South Burlington, I-89
returns to the rural rolling hills that characterize the majority of this
interstate as it starts to parallel highway 7 North. Gorgeous overlooks of Lake
Champlain are available from various vistas along the last thirty miles of
Interstate 89 until the highway ends at the Canadian border, about four miles
north of Highgate Springs, Vermont.
