What are Toxic Product / Dangerous Toxins of Concern?
A list of toxins and toxic products used in construction, manufacturing and our homes would be too long to publish here. Government agencies regulate numerous toxic substances that are useful but poisonous. Many toxic products have been banned. It may take years for the dangerous effects of some toxic substances to appear.
Here are some toxic products and dangerous toxins that Pennsylvania residents may have been unknowingly exposed to:
- Asbestos. This is a natural heat-resistant fiber used in a variety of products and industrial settings. When inhaled or swallowed, asbestos can cause a rare but serious cancer known as mesothelioma. The disease is difficult to diagnose. It has an extended “latency period.” Symptoms can take between 20-40 years to appear. So, asbestos exposure victims often have trouble recalling how they may have been exposed.
- Aspartame. This is an artificial sweetener sold under the Equal and NutraSweet brand names. It is used in thousands of diet soft drinks, gums, yogurts, gelatins and pudding products. A 2005 study by the European Ramazzini Foundation (ERF) concluded that Aspartame can cause cancer. The study found significant increases in lymphomas and leukemias in rats fed doses of Aspartame.
- Creosote. This is a widely used wood preservative made up of many chemicals. The major toxic chemicals in coal-tar creosote are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenol and cresols. Some parts of creosote can enter groundwater or change into other substances. Other parts persist in treated wood products for decades.
- Defective drugs. Modern medicines are incredibly powerful drugs that can cause substantial physical and/or psychological changes. Manufacturers must document extensive research before and after drugs are approved for the American marketplace. Because drug development is very expensive, drug sales can result in huge profits. Sometimes, corporations will obscure research results that can slow a defective drug’s progress toward the market or take it off the market altogether.
- Gadolinium. If you have kidney problems and have had a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedure or Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) that used a Gadolinium-based contrast dye, you may have been exposed to a risk of a debilitating and possibly deadly condition known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NSF/NFD). In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognized a direct connection between NSF/NFD and patients who had received gadolinium-containing contrast agents for MRIs or MRAs since the early 1990s.
- Lead paint. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 out of 10 preschoolers, or 434,000 children between the ages of 1 and 5, suffer from lead poisoning. Poisoning occurs when children either swallow peeling lead paint chips or inhale lead paint dust.
- MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether). This is a toxic compound manufactured with methanol and isobutylene. It is used as a gasoline additive. MTBE is increasingly detected in groundwater throughout the country. In some cases, these contaminated waters serve as sources of drinking water.
- Toxic molds. These molds form on damp or decaying organic matter such as wood, insulation or sheetrock in buildings. Exposure to mold can cause minor symptoms like nasal stuffiness or eye irritation. More severe reactions are fever and shortness of breath. It can also lead to asthma or a disease called “hypersensitivity pneumonitis.”
