Interstate 95
Interstate 95: Better known countrywide as I-95, this 43 mile long Interstate in Rhode Island saw the start of its planning back in the 1940's as the initial 12 mile stretch of the RI Department of Public Works Expressway. The original plans changed of course, as right of ways were bought and the engineering started to take shape.
Originally meant to be a freeway from Cranston to Pawtucket, the first section to be completed was actually from the Connecticut state line to Rhode Island exit 3 at Wyoming, RI in December of 1955. The next section to be completed extended the roadway to RI Exit 6 near West Greenwich, RI in July of 1958. This initial portion was incorporated into the Interstate 95 system by 1959.
One of the key projects of I-95 was the completion of a six-lane bridge over the Pawtucket River in 1956. Land acquisitions north and south of the bridge were completed in the winter of 1961. On the final stages of construction that began out of that round of acquisitions, a major artery for this Rhode Island area was finished in December of 1965: from the Huntington Expressway, near downtown Providence, out to the Massachusetts State Line.
In 1968 and 1969 five additional portions of I-95 were completed and or brought up to Interstate grade. By September of 1969 re-construction began on some of the original 1950's portions of I-95.
Exit numbers for Rhode Island's portion of Interstate 95 are based on the consecutive number system beginning at the Rhode Island / Connecticut border at exit 1 and leaving the state at the Rhode Island/Massachusetts border at exit 30, 43 miles to the north.
I-95 whisks you from the rural farms in south Rhode Island through urban Providence in less than an hour.
