Interstate 295
Interstate 295: Known also as I-295, Interstate 95 serves the purpose of bypassing I-95 around The City of Providence. I-295 makes a west then northerly half circle around the city of Providence, RI, and peels off westward in West Warwick, RI.
After clearing Providence to the north, it makes an eastward path to the Rhode Island / Massachusetts state line in Cumberland, RI. After traveling through heavily forested areas, I-295 leads directly into the City of Attleboro, MA where it rejoins its I-95 Parent.
The route of Interstate 295 in Rhode Island was actually part of the original planned route for I-95 back in the late 1940?s; it was meant to parallel or replace Rhode Island routes 5 and 116. Construction of this north south spur began in 1964 and it fully opened 11 years later in June of 1975 providing much needed relief for Interstate 95 through Providence.
