What is Vioxx?
Vioxx is a popular anti-inflammatory medication given to ease pain, swelling and inflammation. It is most commonly given to patients with Osteoarthritis. Vioxx belongs to a class of medications know as a COX-2 inhibitors. Vioxx is produced by Merck.

Who should not take Vioxx?
If you have had ulcers, stomach bleeding, asthma, hives or allergic reactions to aspirin or Ibuprofen, severe kidney or liver problems, or are pregnant, you should not take Vioxx. You should discuss this further with your physician.

What are the side effects of Vioxx?
Side effects may include, but are not limited to, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infection, swelling of the lower extremities (legs and/or feet), high blood pressure, itching, stomach ulcers or bleeding, fatigue, vomiting, dark urine, and black stools.

What is Vioxx prescribed for?
Vioxx is most often prescribed for the relief of Osteoarthritis. It can also be used to relieve acute pain and the pain associated with menstruation.

What is a COX-2 inhibitor?
A COX-2 inhibitor works by blocking COX-2 enzymes in the body that trigger pain and inflammation. Traditional NSAIDs (Ibuprofen and aspirin) block both COX-2 and COX-1 enzymes. However, COX-1 enzyme protects the lining of the stomach, but can lead to stomach irritation. A COX-2 inhibitor relieves pain without irritating the stomach.
