In the mid-1800's, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, (current
population 31,933; and 23.017 sq. kilometers land area), was known throughout
the nation as the Lumber Capital of the world. It was a city of millionaires.
One of the largest cities in northern central Pennsylvania from the beginning,
Williamsport shows great pride in its history and accomplishments. Its citizens
also show great humor. Williamsport high school teams are called "The
Millionaires."
Many visitors, and residents alike,
celebrate the early and excellent public transportation with the Great Williamsport
Trolley Tour. In 1865, streetcars were horse-drawn and equipped with a small
stove to keep passengers warm in the winter. Williamsport switched to electric
streetcars in 1891, (one year before Philadelphia) and they ran until 1933.
Today, the tour is a nostalgic ride through Williamsport's historic Millionaire's
Row -- featuring the splendid Victorian mansions built by those long ago
lumber barons, as well as Memorial Park where the first Little League baseball
game was played Also featured are the magnificent tree sculpture of Chief
Waopalanee at the entrance to Brandon Park, the Thomas
Taber Museum, and the Susquehanna
State Park. Check the schedule and arrange your Trolley tour so that you can
also cruise aboard the Hiawatha Paddlewheeler along the Susquehanna River.
Located in Lycoming County, at the
base of Bald Eagle Mountains (1,600' elevation) and at the foothills of the
Alleghenies, Williamsport, is just south of the Appalachian Plateau and on the
west branch of the Susquehanna River. Founded in 1795, this strategic landing
point on the Susquehanna, between the mouths of the Loyalsock and Lycoming
Creeks proved an excellent river harbor with good river access to the Atlantic.
Originally known as "William's Port," there are many
"Williams" who claim it as namesake. Williamsport was incorporated in
March, 1806 as a borough, and in January, 1866, as a city.
Lumber may no longer be king, but
this beautiful Lycoming County continues to attract people with its majestic
mountains, clean streams and rivers, quality education, recreational
opportunities, and arts and culture. It also attracts due to its
businesses, the leadership training programs and tax incentives programs.
Williamsport is the home of the
Little League International
Headquarters and the Little League Museum. Another 'must see' is Reptileland.
