Pennsylvania truck accidents are dangerous and deadly. While the total number of collisions has decreased in recent years, the number of fatalities has risen. Below are 2007 and 2008 Pennsylvania truck accident statistics:
- During 2007, there were 7,087 crashes involving heavy trucks in Pennsylvania.
- There were 178 fatalities, up from 167 in 2006.
- Accidents not attributed to driver fatigue were primarily due to defects, including the following:
- Tire or Wheel-Related: 107 crashes;
- Brake-Related: 63 crashes;
- Unsecure/Trailer Overload: 74 crashes;
- Power Train Failure: 23 crashes; and
- Total Steering System Failure: 21 crashes.
- During 2008, 192 people died in truck accidents.
- 31 of those fatalities, or 16% were occupants of the trucks; the remaining 84% were occupants of other vehicles.
- Rollover accidents and multiple-vehicle accidents were among the leading factors in fatalities.
