DuBois, Pennsylvania

DuBois, Pennsylvania, a small community nestled in the lush forests of the state's Northwest Region. The promise and amenities of urban living are offered along with pristine natural beauty.

Located in Clearfield County, the Census 2000 showed DuBois' population at just over 8,000.  Interstate 80, Routes 219 and 322 all provide easy access to the town.  The DuBois Jefferson Regional Airport lies seven miles away in Falls Creek.  Acting as the region's transportation hub, DuBois also has easy access to rail lines.  The airport is a designated Foreign Trade Zone, which can reduce or eliminate tariffs and duties that businesses pay on imported as well as exported products.  DuBois manufacturing firms take advantage of all these assets, and the region distributes products worldwide.

A major industry in DuBois for many years has been glass manufacturing.  Owens-Brockway, a leader in glass container making, has two plants located just north of DuBois.  Within the Greater DuBois region, the powder metal industry is becoming prominent and more machinery-making firms are moving in.  Gasbarre Products, Inc is the world's largest producer of the machinery necessary to make powder metal products.  Triangle Auto Springs and Invensys Energy Metering corporations have called DuBois home since the early 1900's.

As well as these larger industries, DuBois' economy has always relied on the surrounding forests.  The Allegheny National Forest has long been known for its wealth of black cherry and other hardwood trees.  The timber industry was booming during the days when the railroads were being built, and with today's conscious harvesting techniques, export sales on timber remain high.  The region contains a wealth of resources, including coal and natural gas. The Clearfield County Economic Development Corporation carefully monitors as well as encourages incoming businesses.  A designated Keystone Opportunity Zone, DuBois offers many tax incentives, grants and loans.  Protecting the precious natural resources and the outstanding quality of life that DuBois offers is equally important to city leaders.

One vital resource is the area residents themselves.  Known for being productive employees with strong work ethics, the community provides many educational opportunities for its people.  The DuBois Business College, Penn State DuBois, and Triangle Tech are all outstanding schools of higher learning.

What DuBois residents value the most, though, is the lush wilderness all around them. Miles of trails meander through the forests, great for hiking and biking, or snowmobiling and cross-country skiing during winter. In neighboring Elk and Cameron Counties, wild elk herds still roam free.  Unspoiled beauty, and wild, scenic waterways delight the sportsman as well as the simple nature lover.  Rare stands of old-growth trees still remain here, and abundant wildlife roams.  DuBois, Pennsylvania boasts urban prosperity along with the peace and quiet of nature.
