Berks County, Pennsylvania, found in the southeastern sector of the state, is a dynamic urban County ideally situated in the center of the economically powerful Washington DC to New York corridor. Its reachable markets also include Philadelphia, 56 miles to the southeast, and Baltimore, 97 miles to the south.
Covering over 800 square miles, Berks County's population has increased by 26% in the past few decades, numbering at more than 373,000 according to Census 2000 figures. The per capita personal income for each resident increased 15.8% from 1997 to the year 2002, when it was recorded as $29,531. In 2003, many residents worked in manufacturing, where the average income was more than $42,000.
Thirty-one towns and boroughs combine to form Berks County, with the city of Reading being the county seat. Reading's population was over 81,000. Penn State University is located here, as well as the Reading Area Community College. Berks County is home to four other educational institutes also, including Albright and Alvernia Colleges, Kutztown University and the Berks Technical Institute, found in the Borough of Wyomissing.
Over 9.5 million visitors come to Berks County each year. Though a predominantly urban region, residents and County leaders have carefully preserved their scenic natural beauty as well as many historic covered bridges, centuries-old farmhouses, and quaint barns covered with Dutch hex signs that lend the area its own distinct flavor. Tourists come from the nearby major metropolises to relax in the rustic beauty of Berks County. Historic sites and museums are abundantly scattered throughout the County, including the Daniel Boone Homestead, where the famous frontiersman was born. Outdoor recreation at its finest is offered here. The Blue Marsh Ski Area, offers snowboarding and tubing enjoyment along with skiing. Blue Marsh Lake provides hiking and biking trails, fishing, boating and swimming. 6,200 acres of woodland surround the lake, inviting birdwatchers and hunters to seek game and sight the many migratory birds that stop here along their journeys. Golfing amidst Berks County's lush rolling hills is a true delight, and twelve courses dot the landscape.
