Interstate
70:
Interstate 70 runs 167.92 miles through the state of Pennsylvania.
I-70?s western entrance is at the WV-PA state line, and its eastern
entrance is at the PA-MD state line. Interstate 70?s major junctions
include Interstate 79, Interstate 79, and Interstate 76. The major
cities in PA that are served by I-70 are Washington, Monessen-Charleroi,
and Breezewood.
Interstate 70 is also known as The Pennsylvania Turnpike from Exit 75 to
Exit 161, The Raymond P. Shafer Highway from Exit 18 to Exit 21, and the
Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway from Exit 147 to the Maryland-Pennsylvania
state line.
Interstate 70 is one of the few Interstate Highways that has traffic signals.
Several traffic signals are located on the connection between the Pennsylvania
Turnpike (Interstate 76) and Interstate 70 through Breezewood, Pennsylvania via
U.S. 30. Entering Pennsylvania, Interstate 70 merges with the Pennsylvania
Turnpike (Interstate 76) and separates at Breezewood. Interstate 70 traffic must
follow U.S. 30 through the business district in Breezewood to connect between
Interstate 76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) and the Interstate 70 freeway heading
south from Breezewood.
I-70 was first known as I-70S with different routing than it has today. The
current Interstate 70 was completed in 1968. It has undergone many major
renovation projects since 1968. One project in 2000 was the result of a mine
company removing coal from underneath the road?s surface. This caused a 1.5 mile
stretch of I-70 in Washington County to drop 6 inches.
Another major project started when a concrete beam box and part of the guardrail
dropping off the Lake View Drive overpass onto the highway. This prompted a
review of other similar bridges in 2006, which resulted in the closing of two
more similar structures as ?structurally deficient?.
Information on construction and conditions can be obtained from Travel Radio
1610 on the interstate and Travel Radio 1640 on the Turnpike.
