Lycoming County, Pennsylvania

Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, known as the birthplace of the All-American tradition of Little League, is an area of unique natural beauty and classic national charm.  The meandering Susquehanna River bisects the County, while the haunting Appalachian Mountains surround it.  Much of the region is fertile farmland scattered through vibrant green forests.  Quaint small towns rich in local history stand next to a progressive modern city of top-notch technology and culture.

The 2000 Census counted Lycoming County's population at just over 120,000, spread through an area covering over 1200 square miles. Eleven towns and boroughs are incorporated into the County, as well as the lively city of Williamsport, the county seat and commercial hub of the region.  Residents enjoy mild summer temperatures ranging in the mid 70's to mid 80's and 40 inches of average annual rainfall, keeping the County lush and green. Winter temperatures average low to mid 30's with average snowfall of 51 inches, a skiers delight.

The charming small towns of Lycoming County offer many unexpected delights.  The borough of Hughesville is the scene of the annual Billtown Blues Festival as well as the Lycoming County Fair.  Benjamin Franklin charted the town of Muncy.  It once served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and today antique shows and exhibits are held here, as well as the Muncy Strawberry Festival.  The king of all festivals though, must be proclaimed the Williamsport Mardi Gras.  Emulating the traditions held in New Orleans and other southern cities since 1699, this spectacular Pennsylvania party will be in its 9th year in 2005.

Williamsport comes alive with arts and entertainment in this mostly rural County.  Boasting their own Symphony Orchestra as well as a Civic Ballet, Williamsport also offers Broadway musicals and such fine performers as Bill Cosby, Barry Manilow and David Copperfield, appearing at the exquisite Community Arts Center.  Lovingly restored, this 1928 building is today considered the 'Jewel of Downtown Williamsport' and seats 2,000 patrons.  The Little League Museum is found here and the World Series of Little League is played in the Lamade Stadium in South Williamsport.

Dining choices come in many flavors throughout Lycoming County.  From the award-winning Bullfrog Brewery and historic taverns and pubs, to the finest gourmet cuisine available, Lycoming County is noted for excellent dining.

Perhaps the greatest treasure of Lycoming County remains its natural heritage.  The Tiadaghton State Forest covers 215,000 acres of the northern portion of the region.  Birdwatchers flock to this pristine wilderness, as do hikers and cyclists using the many miles of trails.  The Ravensburg State Park climbs through a steeply walled gorge full of phenomenal rock formations.  Five tributaries of the Susquehanna River cut through Lycoming County, offering excellent fly-fishing.  Over two million acres of land in north central Pennsylvania are set aside for game land, providing hunting for bear, deer, small game and foul.  The entire County is a haven for cross-country skiers and snowmobiling, while downhill ski resorts lie 45 minutes away.

Lycoming County, Pennsylvania holds the best of the American dream.  From Little League and community values, prosperity as well as fun, to the deep hush of our precious forests, Lycoming County preserves it all for us.
