Interstate
90, I-90, at over 3,000
miles in length, is the longest Interstate Highway in the United States.
It is the northernmost east to west, coast to coast interstate highway
in the system and it crosses the Continental Divide just east of Butte,
Montana. It begins in Seattle, WA and ends in Boston, Massachusetts at
Logan International Airport. Over 244 miles of this mammoth highway
travels through northern Ohio, where it's known primarily as the Ohio
Turnpike. On these portions designated as the Ohio Turnpike, I-90 is a
toll road as it is for most of its length with the exception
northeastern Ohio (not part of the Ohio Turnpike and throughout
Pennsylvania.
I-90
goes through the cities of Toledo, Elyria, Cleveland, Ashtabula and
Conneaut. It has full interchanges with the following interstate
highways in Ohio: Interstate 75 in Toledo, and Interstate 71and 77 in
Cleveland. Cleveland also contains the spur route 490 or Clark
Expressway, which crosses the Cuyahoga River and acts as a connector for
I90 / I-71 on the west side of the river and I-77 on the east side.
It is accepted that Interstate 280 in Toledo, Ohio is as much a spur of
Interstate 90 as it is of Interstate 80 because Interstate 80 and 90
designate the same highway (the Ohio Turnpike) in northwestern Ohio.
I-280 links Toledo, Ohio and with I-75 to Detroit, Michigan.
One of the more odd yet hazardous stretches of Interstate 90 is the
section of highway that passes through downtown Cleveland, known locally
as Dead Man's Curve. Here, the road takes a nearly 90-degree turn. While
there are plenty of large signs and flashing lights alerting motorists
to this turn, there have still been a large number of accidents due to
inattentive motorists. There are plans to realign the freeway along a
shallower curve within the next decade, as part of a larger project to
improve the freeway system in Cleveland.
