Interstate
71, Large portions
of I-71 were originally to be built as an Ohio State Toll Road
designated State Highway 1 back in the 1950?s and was earmarked to
become the second Ohio Turnpike. The Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956
changed those plans and those road portions the foundation of the
Freeway.
This north south roadway starts as I-64 / I-65, in Louisville, Kentucky
as part of the very complicated Kennedy Interchange and terminates in
Cleveland, Ohio as I-90, 343 miles later.
I-71 makes an in state, 247 mile trip from the Ohio Kentucky
border at Cincinnati, where it connects with I-74 and I75 and the I-275
beltway. It then travels northeast through the cities of Columbus and
I-70 and on to its termination in Cleveland where it connects to a
myriad of gateways to the east and New England such as I-76, I-80 and
I-90.
I-71 has but one spur in the state of Ohio and that is I-271. It is a
major highway for the cities of Cleveland and Akron. Varying from four
to six lanes wide in places (and eight to twelve with express lanes
added lanes north of I-480) it runs from a junction with I-71 in
Weymouth, Ohio to I-90 in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. Officially designated
the Cleveland Outerbelt East, it is rarely referred to by that name.
