New Jersey's northern meadowlands to its southern farmlands, the New
Jersey Turnpike runs through one of the nation's busiest regions, The

"magic carpet" being built by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority was to
provide vehicle owners when it was completed late in 1951. Long
unobstructed sight, wide travel lanes and shoulders, easy curves, and no
crossroads assured that safety and comfort.
?With fifteen
traffic interchanges where vehicles may enter or leave, the turnpike will
connect with leading highways to famous seashore resorts east and to other
points west?, so said the advertising of that era.
Since
that time the New Jersey Turnpike has expanded to 29 interchanges and now covers
148 miles, including the Hudson County Newark Bay Extension, Pearl Harbor
Memorial Turnpike Extension and the Western Spur. The lanes have been widened
and additional lanes have been added, as well as a dual roadway between
interchanges 8-14, and the HOV lanes between 11- 14, making the turnpike as wide
as 14 lanes in some areas.

E-Z Pass toll lanes are installed and working on the turnpike, including a
special high speed E-Z Pass lane at barrier interchange 6A.
