Interstate
295:
I-295 is a bypass route from a junction with Interstate 95 south of
Wilmington, Delaware to a junction with I-95 north of Trenton, New
Jersey.
Stretching nearly
70 miles from the Delaware Memorial Bridge to the Trenton area, the
north-south Interstate 295 parallels the New Jersey Turnpike. While the
New Jersey Turnpike serves long-distance Interstate traffic bypassing
the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan area, I-295 serves the local
traffic needs of Salem, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington and Mercer
counties with plenty of rural interchanges with local state and county
roads.
I-295 crosses into
New Jersey at the Delaware River via the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The
bridge is actually two suspension bridges carrying traffic in opposite
directions. One bridge carries traffic from Delaware to New Jersey,
while the other span carries traffic from New Jersey to Delaware. At the
north end of the toll bridge a connection is provided with the south end
of the New Jersey Turnpike. The Delaware Memorial Bridge is the only
toll portion of I-295.
The
Pennsylvania Turnpike/Interstate 95 Interchange Project in Bristol,
Pennsylvania, will route I-95 via the Pennsylvania Turnpike to the New Jersey
Turnpike at Exit 6.
I-295
will be extended past its current terminus at US 1, across the Scudders Falls
Bridge, and into Pennsylvania to the location of the Interchange Project.
