Interstate
93: I-93?s 131 miles
of Interstate in New Hampshire accounts for almost 3/4ths of the
Interstate?s 188 mile total length.
Beginning in Massachusetts, at a juncture with I-95 just south of
Boston, I-93 enters New Hampshire 46 miles later near the city of Salem,
NH, then on to Manchester and Concord.
After Concord, an almost straight northern path through the mountains
and forests of northern New Hampshire takes I-93 to the Vermont state
line at Littleton, NH. From there I-93?s northern terminus is only
another 11 miles (in Lower Waterford, Vermont).
There are two spur routes on I-93: I-393 and I-293. I-293 is a north
south beltway around center city Manchester, New Hampshire.
Just north of the city where the spur
road reconnects with I-93 the Interstate has a gap of sorts. Through the
Franconia Notch State Park, the I-93 becomes the Franconia Notch
Parkway. This eight mile two lane freeway with a median divider was
built as a compromise between State officials and The Parks Department.
It has a reduced speed limit of 45 mph. While the exits on this stretch
of freeway follow the I-93 designations, it is not a recognized part of
the Interstate Highway System. Instead I-93 is considered to be in two
sections connected by the Franconia Notch Parkway which until recently
was separately signed as US Route 3 with signage directing motorists to
I-93.
Just south of this eight mile
parkway and just before I-93 joins its I-293 spur, I-293 still carries the
nomenclature of the Everett Turnpike and herein lies the only toll along its
entire length in New Hampshire.
I-393 is a feeder road going east from I-93 a few miles north of the city of
Concord, New Hampshire. I-393 connects to U.S. Route 4 (to Portsmouth/I-95) and
State Highway 202 (Rochester, NH/Maine state line).
