Interstate 91

Interstate 91: I-91 in Massachusetts is a North - South thoroughfare running through the Western portion of the state. It enters from the south across the Connecticut border near Springfield, MA and exits at the Vermont border near Bernardston, MA.  Beginning in New Haven, CT and ending at the Canadian border to the north, I-91 has the least mileage in its pass through Massachusetts - just 55 of its 290 miles.

I-91 connects with east - west Interstate 90 in the northern section of Springfield, MA and then passes through Chicopee, Holyoke and Northampton. From there it's a forested ride in rural Massachusetts until it crosses into Vermont without coming across any other major towns or cities in Massachusetts.

There are two Spur routes that keep the traffic out of downtown Springfield and they are I-291 and I-391. They do an excellent job of looping around Springfield and also serve as part of the interchange between I-90 and I-91.
