Interstate 90

Interstate 90: I-90 in Massachusetts is the longest Interstate Highway in the country. It is an east - west, coast to coast route starting in Seattle, Washington and terminating in Boston, Massachusetts at the Logan International Airport. Of its 3,100 mile total length, Massachusetts plays host to the final 135 miles where it is concurrent with the Massachusetts Turnpike. Originally terminating at I-93 in Boston, it was extended 1.3 miles so that it directly serves the Logan International Airport and terminates just slightly beyond the entrance. This extension project was known as the Big Dig in 2003.

I-90 interchanges with 4 interstate highways: I-91 in West Springfield, at the northern terminus of I-84 in Sturbridge, I-95 in Weston, and at Boston's Inner Harbor at I-93. Interstate 90 also connects to 2 spur roadways. The first is I-290, a northern spur feeding the city of Worcester.  Here, I-290 bears a branch about 10 miles long, called I-190, that moves traffic directly north into Leominster, Massachusetts some 25 miles north of the split. I-90 crosses over an unrelated spur, I-495 in Westborough, without an interchange.

In the late evening of July 10, 2006, a three-ton concrete ceiling panel measuring 20 feet by 40 feet collapsed onto a car traveling on the two-lane ramp connecting northbound I-93 (Southeast Expressway) to eastbound I-90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) in South Boston in the area previously mentioned as the 'Big Dig'.  The collapse killed a passenger in the car, while the motorist escaped with minor injuries. As of Feb 2007 some sections are still not reopened.
