I-75
covers the Midwest and Southeastern United States. It travels 1,786
miles from the State of Florida?s Palmetto Expressway in Hialeah,
Florida (just west of Miami) to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan at the
Ontario, Canada border. Interstate 75 is one of the major north-south
interstate highways.
Trailing behind
Interstate 95 by only 132 miles, I-75 is the second longest north-south
interstate. This limited access highway roughly follows the general
route of many older at grade highways, including U.S. Route 2, U.S.
Route 27, U.S. Route 25 and U.S. Route 41 among others. Some of these
older U.S. Routes had themselves replaced the original Old Dixie
Highway. The final stretch of Interstate 75 was completed in 1986 in
Florida. The last stretch to receive the I-75 signage was Alligator
Alley in 1993.
Kentucky is home to 192 miles of Interstate 75 passing through the
cities of Corbin, Richmond, Lexington and Covington. I-75 runs from the
state's southern border near Williamsburg to the northernmost tip of the
state at Covington where I-75 and I-71 run concurrently across the
Kentucky ? Ohio State line and into the City of Cincinnati where the
separate. I-75 also shares about 6 miles of roadway with Interstate 64
just east of Lexington Kentucky.

The only spur from I-75 in
Kentucky is I-275. This beltway is a significant piece of highway that circles
the Cincinnati area and provides easy melding of Interstates 71, 74 (a major mid
? west artery) and 75. Primarily a Cincinnati bypass it has almost half of its
roadway in Kentucky and serves the Covington area locally with exits and on
ramps. The western most part of the loop is actually in Indiana.
A five-mile stretch
descending into the Ohio River valley in Northern Kentucky developed notoriety
for its high accident rate; the so-called S-curve was rebuilt through much of
the 1990s. Several stretches of I-75 have been widened to six lanes in recent
years. Long terms plans are to widen the rest of the I-75 in Kentucky to at
least six lanes. The I-71 and I-75's Brent Spence Bridge over the Ohio River is
scheduled for replacement as well.
