Hydroxycut Weight Loss Supplement Linked to Liver Failure

After selling over 9 million units of its popular Hydroxycut supplements for weight loss and enhanced energy, Iovate Health Sciences, the maker of the drug, recalled all versions of the Hydroxycut-branded products on May 1, 2009. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released a consumer advisory linking 23 reports of serious liver injuries, including one death, to Hydroxycut products.

Serious health problems reported from the use of Hydroxycut products included liver damage that required a transplant, liver failure, jaundice, seizures and cardiovascular problems. The FDA’s advisory stated that consumers with any of the products on hand should stop using them.

The FDA concluded that while the liver damage appears to be relatively rare among the products' users, consumers should not be exposed to any unnecessary risk. The following products, as listed by Iovate, are covered by the recall:

• Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
• Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
• Hydroxycut 24
• Hydroxycut Carb Control
• Hydroxycut Natural
