An ever larger part of civil
litigation consists of employment and discrimination disputes. Employees who are
terminated, laid off, demoted, or harassed in the workplace need to know their
rights, and need to know them as soon as possible. Whether there is an
employment agreement or not, employers who terminate valuable employees without
good reason can expect to answer for their actions. On the other hand, business
owners have the right to terminate employees where there is a legitimate
business reason for doing so.
At Munley, Munley & Cartwright, our employment law practice
group has handled cases in the following areas:
Age discrimination.
Sexual harassment in the workplace.
Termination of company minority
shareholder's employment.
Fair Labor Standards Act litigation.
Major employee benefits dispute.
Fast Action Required in Discrimination Cases
Before any lawyer can help, employees with discrimination claims must call the
PHRC immediately at (717) 787-9784. This is the Pennsylvania Human Relations
Commission.
Employees who believe they have been terminated, passed over for hiring or
promotion, demoted, transferred, or harassed in the workplace
MUST FILE FORMAL COMPLAINTS WITH THE PA HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION
WITHIN 180 DAYS OF THE IMPROPER ACTION.
Employees who fail to take action
within this time will lose their rights.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: There is No Excuse for Sexual
Harassment in the Workplace
It is a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for a company to
allow a work environment to exist that is hostile to women. In a landmark
decison in 1993, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that civil suits
may be brought against employers for allowing hostile environments to exist.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, writing for the Court, made it clear that women may
sue their employers in a wide variety of situations where they are unable to do
their jobs because of sexual harassment.
