Slow To Issue Recalls

According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, the Food and Drug Administration criticized Johnson and Johnson for being slow to issue recalls when the company knew there were problems with their products, and the company has issued over half a dozen recalls in 2010 alone.i In August 2010, Johnson and Johnson-owned DePuy Orthopaedics recalled two implants used in hip replacement surgery, ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™.

According to a New York Times article, over 93,000 of these devices have been used worldwide with around 12-13% of patients requiring a second hip replacement surgery after the implants failed.ii Since 2008, the FDA has received more than 400 complaints related to these devices.
