Interstate
80: I-80 is a transcontinental Interstate that starts its
nationwide journey in the San Francisco Bay area. Disputed by the bay
area residents, it officially starts at the western edge of the San
Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The first 1.2 miles, designated the James
Lick Skyway is not actually part of the Interstate Highway system. This
is a minor point at best, but fodder for local discussions.
Interstate 80 is the second-longest Interstate Highway in the U.S.,
connecting downtown San Francisco, California to the suburbs of New
York, following a path quite similar to the Lincoln Highway in the years
before the Interstate Highway System. The 2,903 mile highway roughly
parallels some historically significant travel corridors. Most notable
in the Western U.S. are the Oregon Trail in Nebraska and westward, and
the California Trail in Nevada and California.
After leaving the
?city by the bay? Transcontinental Interstate 80 begins its easterly
journey. As soon as it crosses the San Francisco Bay Bridge I-80 turns
north in Oakland and immediately meets its first interchange, Interstate
580. I-580 rides along a northerly direction with I-80 until it veers
North West at Richmond; here it interchanges with westbound I-580. I-80
then bends northeast at San Pablo and heads toward Vallejo where it
meets up with I-505. It continues on, following the well-traveled route
between the Bay Area and the State Capital of Sacramento. I-80 skirts
past San Fran itself, going over the top of it to the north where it
interchanges with I-5.
After
leaving the Capital, I-80 passes through the cities of Roseville and Auburn as
it begins the slow assent into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Since I-80 is one of only three all-weather trans-mountain paths into Nevada, it
is always busy with commercial, commuter and tourist traffic into the cities of
Reno and Sparks. Interstate 80 crosses the Donor Summit, one of the highest
points on the highway, then begins a quick descent into the town of Truckee,
about 10 miles from scenic Lake Tahoe. Turning northeast, I-80 crosses into
Nevada at Mystic, California, ending its 200 mile journey from San Francisco.
The entire
route of Interstate 80 in California is submitted to be part of the National
Purple Heart Trail. The Military Order of the Purple Heart is working to
establish a national commemorative trail for recipients of the Purple Heart
medal, which honors veterans who were wounded in combat.
