TRACTOR TRAILER TRUCK ACCIDENTS & INJURIES

Interstate 5 When I-5 reaches the East Los Angeles Interchange one mile east of downtown Los Angeles, I-5 becomes the Golden State Freeway.

Interstate 5 is the most important highway in California, connecting the state from the rural wilderness of the north to the heavily populated urban centers of the south. This highway is the lifeline of the state as it connects most of the major population centers on its north south journey and is part of the national Scenic Highway System. I-5 is also considered part of the Pan-American Highway, which runs from Alaska in the north to the ?other? Los Angeles in the country of Chile in South America.

Leaving the country to the north, I-5 becomes British Columbia?s Provincial Highway 99. To the south, I-5 crosses the Mexican border at San Diego to the Mexican town of Tijuana and becomes Mexico Route 1D. This 1,375 mile Interstate has 798 of its miles in California beginning at the Oregon state line where it reaches its highest elevation of 4,310 feet on Siskiyou summit, and ending in San Diego at the Mexican border.

This freeway was built in stages between the 1950s and the 1980s, with the last segment opening along a rural stretch north of Redding. Interstate 5 replaced U.S. 99 for much of its mileage in the state, mostly from downtown Los Angeles and north to the Oregon State Line. Even though California State Highway 99, the successor to U.S. 99 in the Central Valley, is still a notable freeway on its own, most through traffic heads for Interstate 5, including the bulk of the Los Angeles to San Francisco traffic. The only metropolitan area not directly in the path of I-5 is San Francisco. It is approximately 80 miles to the west of the I-5 north south path. This path   very closely follows the ancient Native American footpath known as the Siskiyou Trail.

Evidently our original founding fathers found little need to make the run into San Francisco that many do nowadays, and do so with ease on Interstate 80, which intersects with I-5 in Sacramento.

Interstate 5 intersects with Interstate 8 in San Diego and Interstate 10 in Los Angeles. Spur Routes also serve two major metropolitan areas. I-805 in San Diego serves as an in-town expressway while the main I-5 acts as the bypass to the west of town. In Los Angeles I-405 serves as a north south alternate as it really just parallels I-5?s route, while I-605 does a similar path until veering north east in north central LA.   I-105 is an east-west neighborhood connector tying into I-605 and I-5.
