17 year old driver attempts to pass in no-passing zone, swerves into ditch killing four

Texas Accident Kills Four Teenagers, Injures Two

A Wise County, Texas two-car collision took the lives of four teenagers and seriously injured two others.  The 17-year-old driver of a Ford Mustang traveling southbound on Farm Road 730 near Decatur, around 3:15am Saturday morning, attempted to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone when the car crashed into a northbound Ford F-350 pickup truck. Although both vehicles swerved to avoid the collision they swerved into a ditch and collided.  Four passengers in the Mustang died, the driver of the Mustang remains hospitalized in critical condition, and the driver of the pickup was being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

CA Family Awarded $29.2 Million in Car Crash Lawsuit

Two children dead, one paralyzed in head-on car crash

The family of two children that died in November 2006 in a head-on collision on Highway 12 near Fairfield, California has been awarded $29.2 million by a Solano County jury.  The driver of an SUV crossed the center line and slammed into the oncoming passenger car leaving the two children dead, one child paralyzed from the waist down and the mother, and driver of the car, in the hospital for 2 months recovering from her injuries.

The driver of the SUV was traveling close to 80 MPH and attempted to pass two vehicles in a no-passing zone.  He was sentenced to 23 years in prison.  He was found 65% liable in the case, but due to his limited insurance coverage the state will pay the majority of the award.

The state was found 35% responsible in the case for unsafe conditions on the roadway. […]

Passing car sends van of 13 Amish farmers under a tractor killing five and injuring nine in fatal accident

New York Accident Kills Five, Injures Nine

First in a series of fatal accidents: A north bound van carrying 13 farmers from the Amish community in Steuben County was sideswiped by a south bound car passing a slow-moving tractor sending the van into and under the tractor killing 5 of the passengers.  Seven others in the van were seriously injured.  The driver and passenger of the tractor were also injured.  The driver of the car that caused the Tuesday afternoon accident was not injured, and he has been charged with five counts of criminally negligent homicide, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, unsafe passing, speed not reasonable and prudent, and failure to keep right after passing. He is being held on $125,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond.

Colorado Medical Malpractice Suit Against Nurses Settled

Undocumented immigrant receives $700,000 in medical malpractice suit settlement

The Colorado Springs, city-owned Memorial Health System settled a lawsuit filed by an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who claimed her baby suffered severe brain injuries during delivery four years ago.  The now four-year-old is a spastic quadriplegic who cannot stand, sit or walk, and has the intellectual level of a six-month-old.

The city paid $700,000 to the child because the care provided by the Memorial nurses and the doctor “fell below the standard of care” by failing to properly interpret fetal heart monitoring strips that showed the baby in distress during labor, having the mother hold her breath which further depleted the oxygen going to the baby and delivering the baby vaginally rather than performing a cesarean section.

The lawsuit only covered the negligence by the nurses.  The doctor is employed by Peak Vista Community Health Centers which is a Federally Qualified Health Center.   […]

Virginia Teenager Dies in Single-Car Accident

According to WAVY.com, a teenager lost her life early Saturday morning in a single-car accident after she lost control of the vehicle she was driving on I-64 in James City County, Virginia.  The 17-year-old girl was traveling east when she over-corrected, ran off the road and struck a tree.  A passenger in the car was taken to the local hospital with unspecified injuries.  Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Woman Dies After Driving into Oklahoma Lake

A 95-year-old Norman, Oklahoma woman apparently suffered a medical episode before driving her car off Alameda Drive and ending up in Lake Thunderbird on Monday.  She was driving east, “at a high rate of speed” when she struck a pipe gate causing her car to veer off the road and sink in the lake.  […]
